Independence Day Picnic
Hosted by AICR (The American International Club of Rome)
by Jeanne

It was a happy picnic, and once more, the DAR craft table was a great success. We had 30-40 children completing wooden bird feeders and/or gliders in about three hours. Some of them did not want to stop building their projects for mundane things like eating hamburgers or doing the sack race.

Our craft activity was the high point of the picnic for a lot of children; many of them had never used a hammer before, nor had they ever made anything from wood. The parents were very happy to see their children busy hammering nails into wood or putting pieces of wood together.

Some ladies from Oregon dropped by the craft table and said they were eligible for DAR, and might join up when they get back home. Some others said what a great thing it was that the DAR encourages children's awareness of nature.

The Patriotic Gift Basket was much appreciated, and Emily did a good job with the national anthem.

All in all, it was a fun way to celebrate Independence Day! Hopefully next year, more Pax Romanae will be able to participate in celebrating Independence Day in Rome.
